Ensembletto in three movements with a coda for three musicians and nine instruments
A new edition of the “Venice Suite” by composer Elena Sokolovski appeared in 2023, 17 years after its premiere in the USA, at Texas Christian University, with a recording of the work by the Albany Records Company, New York, live radio broadcasts and a review of the work, which was published in "Fanfarе magazine", USA. This second edition differs quite seriously from the previous one, but not in the artistic quality of thematic themes and instrumental colors, but in the general concept. That is why the author renamed the work, calling it not “Concerto Grosso” (which was a little heavy), but “Ensembletto”, thereby emphasizing the grace and delicacy of this music.

Vocalise for Trumpet and Piano is one of my very early compositions. I wrote it when I was still studying at the Musical College at the Moscow State Conservatory. Then the question that stood before me, who I want to become in the future – a musicologist or a composer – was at the very beginning of my understanding. But gradually outlined the answer to the upcoming choice. My mother, member of the Union of Composers, doctor of art history, professor of the Moscow State Conservatory Marina Skrebkova-Filatova, very closely followed the development of my interests, studying composition with me at home, especially since she herself graduated from the composition department. She discussed with me many times how exactly to develop musical thought and use the created material in terms of imagery and dramaturgy. It was my mother who advised me to attend a composition circle under the guidance of Professor Konstantin Batashov. And so, step by step, in the process, my compositions began to appear.

Among the works of Elena Sokolovski there are works written in her student years. Some were subsequently revised and received new editions, others did not need any alterations. The latter include the work "À une étoile" to the words of Alfred de Musset for soprano, flute, percussion and organ.

In 2010, the composer Elena Sokolovskaya wrote three romances based on the verses of Heinrich Heine for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann, which were performed in Moscow. In 2022, Elena Sokolovsky created the second edition of this work, changing its genre and calling it songs. When comparing the two editions, the composer's creative growth is very noticeable, a much deeper penetration into the meaning of the poet's poetry, the dramatic and technical mastery of the work. This growth prompted the author of the music to compose, in fact, a new work based on the same poems by Heinrich Heine. The new name of Elena Sokolovski's vocal work also testifies to the change in genre appearance: the genre and the musical variant-strophic form of the songs (Lied) are more in line with Schumann's creative style, to which the works are dedicated.

Composer Elena Sokolovski owns four pieces for two clarinets (A) called "Temperaments" (according to the classification of Hippocrates). These pieces were written back in her youthful conservatory years, when Elena was fond of studying various composing techniques of the 20th century, including the dodecaphony system and studied the course of polyphony. The plays of the young composer could have remained only a "test of the pen", a solution to various technical problems, but the result turned out to be high and successful. Evidence of this was the repeated performances of the suite by student clarinetists in the classroom and at concerts by young composers.

Suite for trio (clarinet [A], viola and piano) was created by composer Elena Sokolovski in 2012. Bright and contrasting images of a bygone era, captured by a modern author, appear in relief before the listener. As if you see now the figures of the Spanish nobles proudly moving in the dance, then the French courtiers riding in carriages outside the city. Or suddenly we see towers with loopholes and fortress walls of the building: once it was a majestic castle on the Rhine, from which only ruins remained in the Baroque era... But let's not be sad – near Naples we are waiting for a village holiday with its fiery dances and the virtuoso playing of rural musicians!

The work by Elena Sokolovski “Sonatina for Two Clarinets and Two Bassoons”, composed in 2017, is a quartet of three parts for two clarinets (A) and two bassoons. In terms of volume, it can be called a microsonata cycle – the whole work lasts about six minutes, and in terms of character – music for a cartoon about toy soldiers and various other figures.
