The composer Elena Sokolovski turned to the harp instrument more than once. One of her harp compositions was the "Little Sonata". The premiere of the work took place in the Small Hall of the Moscow State P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory performed by Aidana Karasheva.
This work is one of the examples of a bright, joyful direction in the composer's work. The sonata consists of three parts and, in fact, meets all the signs of the grand solo sonata genre, with the exception of one thing - the whole work sounds only 7 minutes! That is why Elena Sokolovski gave her the name "little sonata".
The first movement is written in the form of a sonata without elaboration and has two themes. The initial theme has a swift, flying character; the second theme is a variant of the first, but the slow tempo and heavy bass clusters give it a completely different image.
The second part embodies the images of calm Russian nature and the epic beauty of landscapes in the style of the music of the composers of "The Great Five". Light, graceful harp passages resemble the sound of a forest stream or the rustling of birches, so characteristic of a fine summer day…
The finale of the sonata has a very lively character and is built on diverse and rather contrasting images: the dance melody is accompanied by glissando, rhythmic beats on the soundboard of the instrument and the singing of the harp soloist, who, under the direction of the author, sings the harp melody. The finale uses the genre of rock'n'roll, bright passages, sonorous chords. The whole complex creates a feeling of youth and joy.
The sonata of Elena Sokolovski belongs to the composer's very successful works and will constantly captivate listeners with her bright imagery.
